The Pine Beetle Epidemic In Colorado
An estimated two million acres of Colorado forests have been decimated by the Mountain Pine Beetle which gained a foothold after the drought of 2002. Summit County, Eagle County, and Grand County are among the areas hit the hardest in Colorado. Yellowish, brownish and reddish lodgepole pines sweep the mountain faces eight to ten months after the initial attack from the Mountain Pine Beetle.

Mountain Pine Beetles are known to move from dead trees to healthy trees in the late summer. Throughout the fall and winter, the adult Mountain Pine Beetles mate, eggs hatch, larvae feed and grow, and massive networks of tunnels are carved into the trees, sapping them of their nutrients and health.

Telltale signs of Mountain Pine Beetle infestation are the “popcorn-like” clumps which form on the tree’s trunk and the sawdust that rests at its base.

If you have healthy or semi-healthy trees still standing on your property, there are measures you should take:
thin dense stands of trees so less root systems are competing for finite amounts of moisture
treat your trees with organic deep-root fertilization
inoculate your trees to keep them healthy and able to fight off insect attack, drought and disease
• spray your trees in the late spring or early summer before the beetles fly

Once lodgepole pines have died, they should be removed from your property as soon as possible for fire mitigation purposes, as well as aesthetics.

Increasingly, property owners in Summit County, Eagle County, Boulder County, Jefferson County and Grand County are being required to remove dead trees for the community’s protection. Given these current and impending ordinances, it’s wiser to take care of your tree removal sooner rather than later.

In addition to tree removal services, Forestry Solutions replants trees. For our rugged mountain climate and terrain, we recommend firs, spruces, and aspens.
